Rothbury v Rothbury | Round 2 – ROTHBURY Music Festival – Rothbury, MI – (a)
Growing up on the shores of Lake Champlain, Garret spent his childhood listening to vinyl records (Blood Sweat & Tears, The Beatles, Chicago, Steppenwolf, The Young Rascals, The Chambers Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, The Clancy Brothers, etc) passed down from his ‘60s flower child mother in an old farmhouse on the New York/Quebec border, just a stones throw from the Adirondack Mountains.
Handed a copy of the Grateful Dead’s “Skeletons In The Closet” and Phish’s “Rift” at the age of 10, he soon found his true passion in life- music. From there, the usual evolution of listening to The Allman Brothers, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin took its course.
But, it was his first music festival, Strangefolk’s “Garden of Eden” in 2001, which truly opened the floodgates of what would later amount to a career in music journalism. Spending every cent he earned throughout high school at the now-defunct Peacock Records in Plattsburgh (New York), Garret quickly delved into the works of Miles Davis, The Cure, AFI (the early stuff), John Coltrane, Primus, The Association, Fugazi, The Band, Jane’s Addiction, and whatever he hadn’t tracked down from the Grateful Dead and Phish.
Majoring in journalism at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, an obsession to see as many live shows as possible was born. Venturing up and down the eastern seaboard, Garret traveled far and wide to watch Ratdog, Assembly of Dust, Grace Potter and The Nocturnals, Phish (“It” and the muddy “Coventry”), and who ever else caught his eye over the next four years. A spontaneous trip (while reading Jack Kerouac’s “On The Road”) to Bonnaroo 2005 resulted in an epiphany of someday becoming a writer. It was during this time when he accepted an internship at State of Mind Music Magazine in Burlington, Vermont. His work there evolved into a staff writer position, which he still holds to this day.
The path of music journalist had begun.
Graduating in 2007 with a B.A in Journalism and a B.A. in History, he took a job as an arts and entertainment reporter for the Teton Valley News in Driggs, Idaho. It was here he received the 2009 Idaho Press Club Award (1st Place – Best Light Feature) for “Chasing the American Dream of Breakfast”. Covering concerts and events across Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana, Garret eventually crossed paths with renowned music photographer Andrew Wyatt while playing a game of horseshoes behind a dive bar in the Teton Mountain Range. An unbreakable bond was immediately formed over endless beers and excited chatter of hopes and dreams in a sometimes unforgiving industry.
After leaving Idaho, Garret headed back to Upstate New York to pursue freelance music writing. Since then, he has written for such fine publications as Roving Festival Writer, Adirondack Daily Enterprise, Press-Republican, Fourth Coast Entertainment Magazine, JamBands.com, GlideMagazine.com, Valley Citizen, and Planet Jackson Hole among others.
Continually searching for the next great sound, Garret has attended and written about innumerable festivals- Burning Man, Gathering of the Vibes, Mile High Festival, Outside Lands, Wakarusa, Rothbury, Festivus for the Restivus, Grand Targhee Bluegrass Festival, Strange Creek Campout, Love Your Mother Earth Festival, and Jackson Hole Music Festival.
He currently resides in Plattsburgh, writing features, conducting interviews, and awaiting the upcoming festival season.
