Rothbury v Rothbury | Round 1 – ROTHBURY Music Festival – Rothbury, MI – (a)
I remember the first time I ever wore the sequin Santa suit. It was Halloween 2005 in Las Vegas during the inaugural Vegoose Music Festival. It was a working vacation for me, and it was during Halloween. I needed a costume.
I found it skimming costume websites. It was a gloriously, hideous mess. It looked as if the year 1979 had vomited on Kris Kringle’s North Pole Candy Cane enclave. I couldn’t imagine Santa looking brighter if he had popped a hundred of Rudolph’s lit-up noses in his mouth like chocolate covered cherries. It was completely awful and perfect. For me.
Since that time, I have happily enjoyed donning the sparkled suit across the country while photographing and participating in music festivals around the country. Over the years, to keep the Christmas spirit year round, I’ve tried as often as possible to hand out free candy canes, lollipops, and glow sticks to festival goers as well.
My story is part of a beautiful insanity that we call the festival circuit. As a former Southern Baptist preacher with a Masters of Theology, I now fill myself with the human spirit. Through my journey and candid photography, I present a single strand of a story both self-discovery and redemption that’s sewn into the fabric of a tie-dyed universe.
